Makar Sankranti, also known as the Kite Festival, is celebrated with enthusiasm across India, marking the arrival of spring. As we observe the festival on January 15 this year, actress Sonal Singh, currently portraying the character of Bhakti in Kyunki… Saas Maa Beti Bahu Hoti Hai on Zee TV, shares her nostalgic feelings about Makar Sankranti. Playing the role of the innocent and supportive neighbor in the show, Sonal reflects on the significance of the celebrations and the valuable lessons she’s learned through the art of flying kites.

*Talking about the significance of Makar Sankranti, Sonal Singh expressed,* “When I think about Uttarayan, three things always come to mind – Ahmedabad, the words Kai Po Che, and Undhiyu. I’m a true-blue Gujju girl, and after Navratri, Uttrayan is one of my absolute favourite festivals. Even though I’ve been living in Mumbai for quite a while now, my heart still belongs to Gujarat, and I really miss celebrating the festival there. If you’ve ever been to Gujarat during Uttarayan, you’ll get it – it’s not just a festival; it’s a grand celebration. From yummy food to laddoos to juice, it’s like a huge celebration, mixed with a bit of friendly competition and a lot of freedom.

*She added,* “I may not know how to fly kites, but I love holding the firki (spindle) for my brothers as they send the kite soaring in the sky. While some folks are busy trying to ‘cut’ each other’s kites, what I enjoy most is when I get to guide the kite on my own up in the sky. For me, kite flying is all about feeling free, letting go. It makes me think about an important lesson – it’s not about controlling but guiding and showing the right way. In life, we need people who encourage us to aim high, not by controlling us, but by helping us find the right path. I’m really fortunate to have a super supportive family that’s always been there for me during both the good and bad times, never letting me fall apart.

“Besides flying kites and savouring delicious treats, I also love making and sharing Tilguds with my neighbours, greeting them with ‘Tilgud Ghya God God Bola,’ spreading some sweetness in their lives and ours. This year, like every year, I’ll be celebrating with my family – enjoying good food, making laddoos, and playing Atakshari to wrap up the day. I wish that not only kites soar high this year, but everyone’s dreams touch the sky, and hearts brim with lots of happiness. Happy Makar Sankranti!” *she concluded.*

Sonal Singh has earned acclaim for her performances in several television shows, including Star Plus’ Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?, Sony TV’s Mere Sai, &TV’s Ganga, Colors’ Devanshi, as well as Sony TV’s C.I.D and Crime Patrol.
